19/01/10: No Sci Fi

One of the biggest problems in my life is that my loving girlfriend, Jisun, has absolutely no interest in science fiction or fantasy. We get along perfectly well when talking about everything else, but the moment I mention cylons or orcs her eyes glaze over and that is the end of that. The thing is, I don't believe that it is a lost cause. My feeling is that she has never been exposed to science fiction or fantasy that has been done properly.
To that end, I am going to start sneaking a bit of light stuff into her video diet over the coming months. I'm not sure where to start, but it has to be something really light and barely noticeable. That means no giant killer robots or anything like that. I personally want to just tie her to a chair, force feed her some pseudoephedrine and then make her watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy, all the Harry Potter movies and all the Star Trek movies back to back, but that would probably have some adverse effects on our relationship, not to mention turning her off to anything fantastical for the rest of her life. In order to get her into the stuff subversively, I have to start out easy. I need the gateway drug of sci fi and fantasy. To this end, I started scouring the internet looking for help in the matter.
There was a decent post on reddit discussing this issue, but it didn't quite do it for me. First of all, the denizen's of reddit are just slightly more trustworthy than /b/tards, which means not at all (If you don't know what I am talking about here, congratulations, you are not a nerd). Granted, they did have some good ideas, but there just wasn't that one special thing that stood out for me. Reddit recommended Firefly, which I think is an excellent show and more drama than science fiction, but it isn't quite what I am looking for. At least not yet, I think that Firefly is a good stage two. I need something with less outer space, I think. Maybe 12 Monkeys? Another recommendation was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Ok, Eternal Sunshine is good. It is light, it is barely sci fi, and it is definitely a good movie. But something about it rubs me the wrong way. I think she will watch it and enjoy it despite it being science fiction, not because of it.
Please don't tell me I have to cop out and start with Back to the Future. Don't get me wrong, I love that trilogy, but I don't know if it is the right place to start for an introduction to the world of science fiction. Anyway, I don't want to be stuck watching Sex and the City reruns for the rest of my days. What can I do!?
